Amaarae is gearing up to drop her Fountain Baby follow-up, titled Black Star, out August 8 via Interscope. The lead single “S.M.O.” just landed with a video shot in Ghana by Omar Jones, and it’s exactly the kind of genre-chaos you’d expect from someone who thinks a steel pan can flirt with a synth.
“S.M.O.” pulls from Ghanaian ’80s highlife, Detroit bass, Magic System, Janet Jackson, and possibly your uncle’s secret disco playlist. According to Amaarae, it’s a sweaty blend of zouk, funk, and club heat, all tied together with a message that’s very clear: slut her out. Like Donna Summer with Wi-Fi.
You can check out the artwork below. And maybe stretch beforehand — this one’s designed to make your hips betray you at a cookout.
